Flight of the Navigator

When we filmed Flight of the Navigator, we knew that some action shots couldn’t be achieved through traditional means, so we turned to an image-to-video workflow. Below are two examples of how we used AI to generate a close-up of a rapidly spinning propeller and a midair shot of the plane using reference images.

For the first shot, the reference frame needed to suggest motion in order to generate a successful video output. To achieve this, I used image-to-image generation to add visible motion blur to the propeller. This AI-generated frame then served as the input for the image-to-video process using Kling.

1. Reference frame.

2. AI-generated Radial Motion Blur from reference.

3. Image-to-Video.

For the second shot, I input a reference image of the plane into ChatGPT to generate a new image of the aircraft flying during golden hour. That output was then used to create the final video.
